Meet Krystal, our Garden Science instructor at #4hcapital "I joined I 4- H Capital because I’m obsessed with #gardening and enjoy hosting community workshops on my free time. I needed a professional laid back creative work space where I could learn more about gardening, build connections, obtain resources, and learn the skills of teaching and creating lesson plans. I needed to absorb the knowledge from the #LATT and child development trainings so that I can apply those same skills with my students and within the community. I also have the opportunity to become a Master Gardner so that I have the knowledge, skills, and credibility to host my own community garden workshops after my service. I was even able to obtain my Angler certification, and plan on hosting a group of girl fishing trips this summer. Literally EVERYTHING offered by 4-H Capital is aligned with my purpose goals and doesn’t get past me! I take full advantage of the skills and resources available.
A highlight in the garden science program for me, would be watching the expressions on their faces when they see how a tiny seed planted by their hands, has grown into a healthy food they can eat. Most children do not care to eat vegetables, but they will eat a vegetable they grew themselves. My students love eating pizza and ice cream, so I’m making sure that we grow a pizza and an ice cream cone garden by having my students grow veggies they would typically see on pizza and using ice cream cones to start some of their seeds. So, a fun tip on classroom engagement that I would give others, is to simply ask your students what they enjoy and give them choices. Plan activities based on your students interests and they will be more excited, engaged, and bond with you because they know you are actually listening to them. This helps your students feel valued and increases #self-esteem and #respect towards you as their teacher." #4h #4hgrowshere #serveatx #atx #americorps #atx #4hgrows #learnallthetime
