One word to describe this album - legendary. When the two biggest artists of a generation link up for a collaboration album, you would expect nothing less. Watch the Throne was a service to the people as it gave us all what we were dying for at the time, a joint project by Jay-Z and Kanye West. “No Church in the Wild” kicked things off with a sick chorus from Frank Ocean and strong verses from Jay & Ye. On “Lift Off”, Hov recruited his superstar wife, Beyoncé, and Ye delivered a cocky, outspoken verse. Tracks 3 and 4 were the biggest hits on the album which received all the radio play and went off in the clubs - “Ni**as in Paris” and “Otis”. “Paris” was the most “provocative” track and consisted of Jay & Ye bouncing bars off each other over a high tempo K. West beat. “Otis” featured the classic Kanye West sampling we know and love as he chopped Otis Redding’s classic “Try a Little Tenderness”. Kanye’s signature sampling was a key part of the next track, “Gotta Have It”, as well. On this track, Kanye and Hov compared themselves to Miami Heat teammates and basketball legends, LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. These two duos were both at the top of their respected games at the time and were definitely each other’s counterparts. “Welcome to the Jungle” kept with the animal kingdom theme of the album and featured iconic producer Swizz Beatz for his signature ad libs and even provided a chorus. Frank Ocean made another appearance on the record on “Made in America”. This somber track had Jay & Ye reminiscing to a time before their big breaks - Jay pushing drugs and Ye fixing beats. “H.A.M.” appeared on the deluxe version of the album, as this gothic track originally was used to build hype leading up to the album’s release. This album came at the perfect time during the two rapper’s careers. Kanye was no longer lil brother to Jay, as the two have made their own gigantic names for themselves. This album was a passing-of-the-torch of sorts, as Jay handed Ye the throne of the rap game. Since Watch the Throne’s release, Jay and Kanye’s friendship has been awfully shakey but that doesn’t change the fact the two could produce a knockout anytime they collaborate.
