Hope your Sunday is treating y’all well! After working on projects all day, I’m ready to kick back with a Rosemary Rye Li’l Sour! But first, some quick cocktail basics. 🥃
Tip: build any cocktail using this structure: 2:1:1. That’s two parts spirit, one part sour, one part sweet. Having this tip in your back pocket will help you whip up something creative for your social distancing friends.
Tip: limes are pretty sour so I usually use less than the basic ratio. Again, play around with your sours.
Tip: make your own simple syrup (SS). The ratio is 1:1. One part sugar, one part water. Bring to boil, give it a stir and that’s it! This will keep for a week in the fridge. Be creative and infuse your SS with herbs, citrus and spices. 🍊🍋🍈Just add your flavorings when it comes to a boil, take off the heat, cover and steep for 30 minutes then strain.
Now you can build any cocktail! But, not to confuse you, I threw those rules out the window when making this cocktail. 😉 That’s the beauty of having a base and then improvising! I tend to make my SS less sweet and since I didn’t want a traditional “sour” I used less fresh citrus juice when building the cocktail and infused my SS with a few lemon peels in addition to the rosemary! 🌿
Rosemary Rye Li’l Sour
First, make your Simple Syrup:
Rosemary Lemon Simple Syrup
In a small saucepan bring to a quick boil:
1 cup sugar
1.5 cups water
Give it a quick stir, add 2 strips of lemon peel (no white pith), and three 4” sprigs of rosemary. Cover and steep for 30 minutes. Strain into a jar and refrigerate for up to a week. 🌿
In a shaker add:
1.5 oz Rye (or Bourbon)
1/2 oz FRESH squeezed lemon juice
1 oz Rosemary Lemon SS
Add ice, shake, shake, SHAKE- this makes a nice froth to your cocktails! Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Garnish with lemon peel and rosemary sprig. Or, strain into a coupe glass without an ice cube.
