A great way to improve your drawing and observation skills is to make studies from any artist that inspires you. Some people might call it copying, but thinking of it as a study will make your approach to it more critical and you'll get more out of it.
The most important question to ask yourself at the outset is 'what makes me want to draw this?'...'what is it about this drawing (or painting, photo, etc.) that makes it appealing to me?' Then try to capture that in your study/copy. Don't worry about making it exactly like the original...go for the big things like the gesture, attitude, overall light and dark structure, etc. And most importantly do lots of them and have fun with it.
The original (on the right) is by concept artist and character designer John Nevarez.
