A wise man once said, “you’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, know when to run.” As a longtime gambler, I’ve finally learned the art of when to fold ‘em. And that time is now. I’ve overstayed my welcome in things before. And there’s no bigger wasted commodity than time. I am folding on Nashville. Which cuts pretty deep. I wanted to love it here so badly. But it was very much that guy that was good on paper and then just not good for you at all. The South wasn’t anything I expected. And to be fair, I put a lot of pressure on it to perform. After all, it is Music City.
However, I am killing my darlings and cutting my losses and every phrase that means Nashville is over. I’ve lived in many major market cities with transplants but I have never found people to be so backstabbing, vapid, agenda-ed, fake or opportunistic as the people I met in my two years here. Not even in LA. I’m sure there are good folks and I just didn’t get the pleasure of crossing paths with them. But where I come from, people don’t stab people in the back. Here, they stab you and then say “bless your heart” and quote scripture.
As I begin packing to go all in on Seattle, I am forever indebted to many of those backstabbing heart blessers for the career they gave me. The opportunity to rise as they are stuck in quicksand. Always thank the people that doubted you. If it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t work so hard. Next stop Amazon. 🖤
